Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace (December 10, 1815 – November 27, 1852) was an English mathematician and writer, chiefly known for her groundbreaking work on Charles Babbage’s mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine.

The Epiphany: Software is Born

While Babbage viewed the Analytical Engine as a giant calculator for computing nautical and astronomical tables, Lovelace saw something far deeper. In her famous 1843 Notes on the Analytical Engine, she realized that the engine could act upon symbols, musical notes, language, and logical propositions rather than merely numbers:

“The Analytical Engine weaves algebraical patterns just as the Jacquard loom weaves flowers and leaves.”

Her step-by-step algorithm for calculating Bernoulli numbers on the machine is universally recognized as the first computer program in human history.
